CHURCH PICNIC

You are all invited to enjoy a picnic together on Sunday evening, August 18 at the Morgan Creek Park Shelter. It’s located by a great play area for the kiddos! Bring your own food and drinks. (It’s not a  potluck meal and no food or drinks will be provided.)  Bring a game to play or just come and visit. The shelter is ADA accessible. Contact Rachel Stephenson or Paige Eastburn for additional information.

MOVIE NIGHT

We will be viewing the movie Unsung Hero on Sunday, August 11 at 6:00pm. Based on a true story, Unsung Hero follows David and Helen Smallbone as they move their family from Australia to the US with nothing more than their six children, suitcases, and their love of music. This family’s remarkable journey is a testament to the power of family bonds.

LADIES NIGHT OUT

Ladies, you and your friends are invited to enjoy dinner and fellowship on Monday, August 5 at 6:30pm at Naso’s (453 7th Ave, Marion). If you plan to attend, please call or text Deb Gaeta (319-491-7720) or email djgaeta@q.com so she will know how many will be attending. If you want to come but need a ride, please let Deb know and she will arrange to have someone pick you up.

YOUTH OUTDOOR MOVIE NIGHT

Calvary youth will be having an outdoor movie night on Friday, August 16 from 8:00pm to 10:30pm behind the youth building.  Please bring  snacks and drinks to share and be sure to invite lots of friends. Contact Pastor Matt for information.

GRIEF SHARE

It may be hard for you to feel optimistic about the future right now. If you have lost a loved one, you have probably found there are not many people who understand the deep hurt you feel. This can be a confusing time when you feel isolated and have many questions about things you have never faced before. Grief Share groups meet weekly to help you face these challenges and move toward rebuilding your life. On Sunday, August 11 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm we will have a special session of Grief Share that specifically addresses the Loss of a Spouse. Then, beginning Sunday, August 18 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm we will begin a 13-week series of Grief Share. Each session has three distinct elements: a video, group discussion, and personal study with your workbook. You are welcome to begin attending the Grief Share group at any session. Each is “self-contained,” so you do not have to attend in sequence. There is a suggested donation of $20 for the workbook. Register online at www.GriefShare.org or contact Carol Hagen for more information.

 CHECK IT OUT!

A big stack of books has been added to our church library. These 32 books include offerings from the following categories:  apologetics and Biblical worldview, biography, Christian living, prophecy, theology, adult fiction, and children’s fiction. Take special note of a new kid’s series, “The Dead Sea Squirrels” by Mike Nawrocki, one of the creators of Veggie Tales. You will laugh and learn lessons at the same time. Take advantage of the remaining summer and get some reading done!

SPECIAL MEETING

The Board of Deacons has called a special meeting of the members of Calvary Baptist Church, to convene briefly during the morning worship service on Sunday, August 11, 2024. The agenda consists of two items that require approval by vote of our members. First, the Board of Deacons is recommending Sarah Caldwell, Michael Mulvihill, and Claudine Nyambo for membership. If a member has reason to dispute a candidate’s qualification for membership, the member shall promptly communicate the reason privately to the Deacons, so that the reason can be evaluated prior to the meeting at which the membership vote is to occur. Second, the Nominating Committee is presenting Tom Dries and David Sanders as nominees to fill vacancies on the Board of Deacons for the remainder of the term (through March 2026) or until the recently approved bylaws revisions take effect.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY UPDATE

Nursery sign-up for the school year is underway. Many positions are available and we always need workers. Whether you help weekly or quarterly, we appreciate your willingness to help with the children and get to know their parents.  If you are interested in helping in any of the nurseries, sign-up at the Welcome Center or contact Bri Horning.

We are also in need of a Sunday school teacher for the Juniors (grades 4/5). If you would be interested, let Bri know as soon as possible.

We will soon be changing the way we sign children in/out of nurseries. We will be checking them in/out using Breeze. More information will be available as we begin our new school year. It is our desire to keep our children safe and secure when they are in our care. Every child must be signed in/out by an authorized parent/adult. We ask also that if  you are not scheduled to be in a nursery, please do not enter these rooms when children are present. We appreciate your cooperation in keeping our nursery and children’s Sunday school rooms secure.

FAMILY FORUM

APPRECIATION

I want to thank everyone for the cards, gifts, and prayers at my graduation celebration. Please continue to pray for me on my future decisions.

Madison Kaufman

Praises! God knew what was going to happen (see recent sermons on His sovereignty.) His care in the form of the many cards, visits, and prayers by our church family. His provision and care by my family in preparing my home. So many other blessings. For Alex, who has proven everyday that “we are in this together.” For Pastor Jay—truly a blessing.
